Make Your Own Beaded Bookmark
A ribbon, a handful of beads and a simple loop knot make a bookmark that also doubles as a threading lesson.

This is threading turned into something useful: a length of ribbon or cord folded over the top of a page, beaded and knotted at the bottom so it will not slip off. It suits a child who already enjoys books, since the bookmark becomes something they use every day rather than something that sits in a drawer. The whole project takes one sitting and needs almost nothing to clear away afterwards.
What you need
- Ribbon or thin cord, about 30cm
- Pony beads and small charms
- A large-eyed plastic needle (optional)
- Scissors (adult use)
- A small tray for sorting beads
Step by step
- 1
Fold the ribbon in half to find the midpoint and mark it with a light pinch.

Thread beads onto both ends, working outward from the fold.

Encourage a colour pattern, such as repeating the same three beads.

Tie a secure double knot near the end of each ribbon length to stop beads sliding off.

Trim the ribbon ends neatly once the knots are tied.

Slip the folded loop over the top of a book page to test it fits.

Ask them to design a symmetrical pattern that matches on both sides of the fold, checking it as they go.
Safety and supervision
- Small beads and charms are a choking hazard; not suitable for children who still mouth objects.
- Adults handle any cutting of ribbon or trimming of ends.
