Plaster painting hits a sweet spot: the object already looks impressive, so children focus on colour rather than worrying about their drawing. Cast your own from silicone moulds or use a ready kit, then let them go wild with completely unrealistic colour schemes.
What you need
- Plaster of Paris (or a ready-cast plaster kit)
- Silicone dinosaur moulds
- Water and a mixing jug you do not love
- Washable or acrylic paint, 4-6 colours
- Small brushes
- Newspaper and a wipe-clean mat
Step by step

An adult mixes the plaster to the exact packet directions in a ventilated area, keeping dry powder away from children.

Pour into the moulds, tap the tray on the bench to release bubbles, and leave for 40 minutes.

Pop the casts out and let them cure for at least two hours; overnight is better.

Set up a painting station with one brush per colour so there is less rinsing mid-flow.

Paint a base coat, wait ten minutes, then add spots, stripes and eyes.

Once dry, a coat of PVA glue thinned with water gives a tough shine.

Safety and supervision
- Adults mix the plaster in a ventilated area. Avoid inhaling dry plaster dust and keep it away from children's eyes and faces.
- Never pour plaster down the sink — it sets in the pipes. Let waste harden and bin it.
- Plaster gets warm while curing; children should not touch, hold or place fingers in the plaster or mould until it is fully set and cool.
