Sponge painting is the kindest first painting activity there is. There is no brush technique to master, the prints look deliberate, and a toddler who cannot yet draw a circle can still make something worth putting on the fridge.

What you need

  • 2-3 kitchen sponges
  • Scissors (adult use)
  • Washable tempera or ready-mixed paint, 3-4 colours
  • A plate or tray for each colour
  • Thick paper or card
  • Clothes pegs (optional, as handles)

Step by step

  1. 1

Cut the sponges into squares, triangles, circles and a couple of long strips.

  2. 2

Clip a peg onto each sponge if your child dislikes paint on their hands.

  3. 3

Squeeze a tablespoon of each colour onto its own plate and spread it thin.

  4. 4

Show one press-and-lift: press the sponge down, count to two, lift straight up.

  5. 5

Let them fill the page. Resist tidying their composition.

  6. 6

Leave flat to dry for an hour, then trim into cards or bunting.

What kids learn

Cause and effect

Press hard, get a solid shape; press lightly, get a speckled one. They test this dozens of times.

Shape recognition

Naming shapes while printing links the word to a physical object they are holding.

Colour mixing

Overlapping prints show blue plus yellow making green without any lesson from you.

Make it easier

Offer two colours and one big sponge. Fewer choices means more printing and less deliberating.

Make it more challenging

Ask for a pattern: square, circle, square, circle. Repeating an AB pattern is a real pre-maths skill.

Safety and supervision

  • Use paint marked non-toxic and washable, and check the age rating on the pot.
  • Cut sponges yourself and keep scissors out of reach.
  • Wet sponges left in a sealed bag grow mould — rinse and air-dry them.

Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.
