Dyed rice is the workhorse of screen-free play. It takes ten minutes to make, keeps for a year in a sealed tub, and a toddler will scoop, bury and pour it far longer than you expect. Set it on a sheet or a splat mat and the cleanup is one shake outdoors.

What you need

  • 1 kg / 2 lb dry white rice
  • Food colouring or liquid watercolour
  • 1 tbsp white vinegar or rubbing alcohol per colour
  • Zip bags or jars, one per colour
  • A shallow tub or deep baking tray
  • Scoops, cups, funnels and a small jug

Step by step

  1. 1

Divide the rice between your bags, roughly one cup per colour.

  2. 2

Add 1 tbsp vinegar and 8-10 drops of colouring to a bag, seal it, and let your child shake it hard for a minute.

  3. 3

Spread each colour on a baking tray lined with paper and leave to dry for an hour (or 20 minutes in a low oven with the door ajar).

  4. 4

Tip the dry rice into the tub in stripes so the colours stay separate at first.

  5. 5

Add scoops, cups and a funnel. Say nothing and let them start.

  6. 6

When interest dips, hide small toys under the surface and ask them to find five things.

What kids learn

Fine motor control

Scooping and pouring gives children an opportunity to practise controlled hand and wrist movements.

Early maths language

Full, empty, more, less and half all show up naturally while pouring between containers.

Self-regulation

Repetitive scooping and pouring can offer a quiet, focused way to play after a busy morning.

Make it easier

Use one colour only and offer two large cups. Less visual noise helps a two-year-old settle into the play.

Make it more challenging

Add tweezers, a set of numbered cups and a challenge: put four buttons in cup four. Now it is a counting game.

Safety and supervision

  • Dry rice is a choking and inhalation risk. Stay within arm's reach for under-threes.
  • Skip rice entirely if your child still mouths materials — use oats or cooked pasta instead.
  • Sweep spills straight away; rice on a hard floor is slippery.

Frequently asked questions

How long does coloured rice last?+

Up to a year in a sealed container. Let it dry completely before storing or it will clump and smell.

Will the colour come off on hands?+

Not if you use vinegar or alcohol as the fixer and dry it fully. Water-only dyeing does transfer.
