Beginner Embroidery for Kids
A blunt needle, big-holed fabric and thick thread turn stitching into a calm, achievable first sewing project.

Embroidery looks fiddly but the beginner version is not: plastic hoop, wide-weave fabric like binca or burlap, and a plastic tapestry needle with a rounded tip. Children draw a simple shape in pencil first, then follow the line with a running stitch. It is slow, repetitive and genuinely absorbing, and the finished hoop is something they will point out to visitors.
What you need
- 6-inch embroidery hoop
- Binca or other wide-weave fabric
- Plastic tapestry needle, blunt tip
- Embroidery thread or thick wool, 3-4 colours
- Pencil for drawing a guide shape
- Small scissors (adult use)
Step by step
- 1
Stretch the fabric taut in the hoop and tighten the screw.

Draw a simple outline in pencil, such as a heart, star or wavy line.

Thread the needle with a doubled length of thread and knot the end.

Show one running stitch: up through the fabric, along the line, back down.

Let them stitch the whole outline at their own pace, re-threading as needed.

Tie off the thread at the back and trim the ends once the shape is complete.

Make it easier
Use a pre-punched card shape instead of fabric so the needle has a clear hole to find every time.
Make it more challenging
Introduce a second stitch, such as a simple cross-stitch, and let them fill in a small shape with colour blocks.
Safety and supervision
- Use a blunt plastic tapestry needle, never a sharp metal one, for under-eights.
- Adults handle any cutting of fabric or thread.
- Supervise closely and store the needle in the hoop or a pin cushion between sessions.
