Bubble Snake Blower
A cut bottle, an old sock and washing-up liquid make metres of foam snake.

Two minutes of construction produces something genuinely spectacular: blow through the bottle and a rope of foam pours out, a metre long, in rainbow colours if you add a little paint to the sock.
What you need
- An empty plastic bottle
- An old sock
- A rubber band
- Washing-up liquid and water in a shallow dish
- Food colouring (optional)
- Scissors (adult use)
Step by step
- 1
Cut the bottom off the bottle. Adults only, and file the edge smooth.

Pull the sock over the cut end and secure it with the rubber band.

Mix a strong bubble solution: one part washing-up liquid to four parts water.

Dip the sock end in, then blow gently and steadily through the neck.

For rainbow snakes, drip food colouring onto the sock before dipping.

Race two snakes for length, or catch them on dark paper for a print.

Surface tension
Soap lets water stretch into films. Thousands of small bubbles joining into a rope shows it perfectly.
Breath control
Blowing slowly and steadily gives children a chance to practise controlling the length of an outward breath.
Fair testing
Does a thicker sock make a longer snake? A one-variable test with a very fun outcome.
Make it easier
Adults assemble it; the child blows. That is the good part anyway.
Make it more challenging
Test three solution recipes and measure which makes the longest snake in one breath.
Safety and supervision
- Blow out only, never suck in. Demonstrate this and watch the first few attempts.
- Keep soap away from eyes and rinse immediately if it splashes.
- Adults cut the bottle and check for sharp edges. Outdoors only — the ground gets slippery.

Yes. Any absorbent fabric with an open weave works; socks are just the easiest to attach.
