Build a Paper Bridge
Two stacks of books and a sheet of paper turn into an engineering challenge to hold as many coins as possible.

This is a quick engineering challenge rather than a craft: span a gap with a single sheet of paper and see how much weight it holds before it sags or collapses. Folding the paper into pleats, tubes or arches changes the result dramatically, so children end up testing real structural ideas without any of it being explained as a lesson first.
What you need
- Sheets of A4 paper or card, several
- Two stacks of books or blocks of equal height
- A small pile of coins or other small weights
- A ruler
- Tape (optional)
Step by step
- 1
Set the two stacks of books a fixed distance apart, roughly 15cm.

Lay a flat, unfolded sheet of paper across the gap as a first test.

Add coins one at a time to the middle of the bridge until it sags or collapses, and count how many it held.

Fold a new sheet into pleats like a fan and lay it across the same gap.

Test that bridge the same way and compare the coin count.

Try a rolled tube shape or an arched fold and see which design wins.

Comparing flat, pleated and rolled paper gives children a chance to see how shape affects strength, a core engineering idea.
Fair testing
Keeping the gap distance and weight type the same across tests can help children practise controlling variables.

Redesigning a bridge after it fails gives children practice at trying again rather than giving up after one attempt.
Make it easier
Skip the counting and just compare which folded shape visibly holds more books stacked on top.
Make it more challenging
Introduce a scoring sheet and test at least four different folds, then graph the results together.
Safety and supervision
- Keep small coins or weights away from children who still mouth objects, since they are a choking hazard.
- Stack books to a stable, low height so nothing topples onto a child's hands.
