The best building material in your house is already in the recycling. A box city grows over days: buildings on Monday, roads on Tuesday, a bus route by Thursday. It is the rare activity that gets richer instead of stale.

What you need

Assorted cardboard boxes and tubes
Masking tape (easier than glue, and paintable)
Markers and paint
Scissors or a craft knife (adult use)
Scrap paper for signs
Toy cars and small figures

Step by step

Sort boxes by size and decide together what each could be: shop, house, fire station.

Cut doors and windows yourself where they ask for them.

Let them decorate each building fully before moving to the next — finishing matters.

Tape strips of paper onto the floor as roads between buildings.

Add signs, prices and names written by your child, however they spell them.

Leave it up. Play returns to it all week.

Shop signs and price tags give a purpose to writing, which is worth more than a worksheet.

Make it easier

Three boxes, markers only, no cutting. A four-year-old can decorate happily without construction.

Make it more challenging

Introduce a budget and a map: draw the city plan to scale first, then build to the plan.

Safety and supervision

Adults do all craft-knife cutting, away from children.
Check for staples in box seams and remove them.
Keep the city clear of doorways and stairs.
