Coffee Filter Butterflies
Marker colour blooms across wet paper — chromatography that ends as wall art.

Draw thick marker stripes on a coffee filter, add a drop of water, and watch the colour spread and split into its parts. Pinch it into a butterfly with a peg and you have a science demo you can hang from the ceiling.
What you need
- Round coffee filters or kitchen paper circles
- Washable markers (water-based, not permanent)
- A pipette or small spoon of water
- Wooden clothes pegs
- Pipe cleaners
- A tray or baking sheet
Step by step
- 1
Flatten a filter and draw fat bands of colour across it — black and brown split the most dramatically.

Place it on the tray and drip water into the centre.

Watch the colour creep outward. Add water slowly; flooding it just makes grey.

Dry flat for fifteen minutes.

Pinch the middle, clip a peg on, and twist a pipe cleaner for antennae.

What kids learn
Chromatography
Inks are mixtures. Water carries the lighter pigments further, separating them into visible bands.
Prediction
Guessing what black will split into, then checking, is the whole scientific method in ninety seconds.
Fine motor
Squeezing a pipette is excellent targeted finger-strength work.
Make it easier
Pre-draw the stripes and let your child do only the dripping and the folding.
Make it more challenging
Test three brands of marker and chart which produces the most colour bands.
Safety and supervision
- Use water-based markers only; permanent marker fumes are not suitable for this.
- Pipe cleaner ends are sharp — fold them over.
- Pegs can pinch small fingers; show the two-handed opening technique.
