Coffee Filter Rainbow
Marker colours bleed and blend across a wet coffee filter, then dry into a hanging paper rainbow.

Coffee filters soak up colour unevenly and beautifully, so a few felt-tip marks spread into soft, blended arcs the moment water touches them. Children colour the dry filter first, then watch a spray or drip of water do the blending work for them, and the flattened, dried result cuts easily into a rainbow shape to hang in a window.
What you need
- 2-3 round coffee filters
- Washable felt-tip markers in rainbow colours
- A small spray bottle of water
- A plate or tray to work on
- Scissors (adult use)
- String or a paperclip for hanging
Step by step
- 1
Flatten a coffee filter out on the tray so it lies as smooth as possible.

Colour bands of rainbow colours from the centre outward, keeping the marker strokes fairly close together.

Spray the filter lightly with water and watch the colours soften and bleed into each other.

Add a couple more light sprays if the colours have not fully blended, without soaking it through.

Leave the filter completely flat to dry, which takes about an hour.

Once dry, fold it in half and trim into an arc shape to make a clearer rainbow outline.

Attach a loop of string or a paperclip hanger and display it against a window.

Do we need special markers for the colour to bleed?+
Washable, water-based felt-tip markers work best; permanent markers will not spread when sprayed with water.
Can we dip the filter in water instead of spraying it?+
Yes, a very brief dip works too, but a spray bottle gives more control over how much the colours blend.
