A dreamcatcher is a wrapping-and-threading project rather than a difficult craft: wool wound around a hoop builds the base, then thread strung across the middle and decorated with beads and feathers finishes it off. It takes real concentration to keep the wool taut and even, but there is no wrong way for it to look, and the finished piece hangs proudly in a bedroom for months.

What you need

  • A metal or wooden hoop, 15-20cm across
  • Wool or thin cord in one or two colours
  • Thin string or embroidery thread for the web
  • Wooden or plastic beads
  • Feathers, ribbon or fabric scraps
  • Scissors

Step by step

  1. 1

Tie one end of the wool to the hoop and wind it around and around, covering the hoop completely and tucking in the loose end.

  2. 2

Tie a length of thread to the hoop and pull it across to the opposite side, looping it round as you go to build a rough web pattern.

  3. 3

Keep crossing the thread back and forth, pulling gently so it stays taut but does not warp the hoop.

  4. 4

Once the web feels dense enough, tie off the thread securely at the hoop.

  5. 5

Cut three or four lengths of wool or ribbon and tie them hanging from the bottom of the hoop.

  6. 6

Thread beads onto the hanging strands and knot a feather onto the end of each to finish.

What kids learn

Sustained fine motor work

Winding and threading for an extended stretch can help children practise steady, repetitive hand control.

Following a structured process

Building the web in a set order gives children a chance to practise a sequence of related steps toward one result.

Tolerating an imperfect result

A web that comes out uneven still works, which can help children practise accepting a result that is not exactly as planned.

Make it easier

Skip the woven web and simply wrap the hoop in wool, then hang beaded strands from the bottom for a simpler version.

Make it more challenging

Try a more complex web pattern with multiple colours of thread crossing at different points, planned out before starting.

Safety and supervision

  • Small beads are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children who still mouth objects; supervise closely.
  • Keep scissors for adult use when trimming thread ends close to a child's fingers.
  • Hang the finished dreamcatcher out of reach of very young siblings.

Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

What if the web thread keeps slipping loose?+

A dab of clear glue where the thread first loops the hoop, left to dry before continuing, usually stops it slipping.

Can real feathers be used?+

Craft feathers are easiest to source and clean; if using feathers found outdoors, wash and dry them first as they can carry mites.
