Craft foam is forgiving in a way paper is not: it does not tear, it holds its shape, and stickers made from it actually stick. Buy pre-cut foam shapes or cut your own from sheets, then let children build anything from a foam photo frame to a stack of shape animals. It packs away dry and clean, which makes it a good standby for a five-minute gap between other things.
What you need
- Craft foam sheets or pre-cut foam shapes
- Self-adhesive foam stickers (optional)
- Craft glue or a glue stick
- Card backing or a foam base kit
- Googly eyes
- Scissors (adult use for sheet cutting)
Step by step
- 1
Cut foam sheets into simple shapes ahead of time, or use ready-cut pieces.

Lay out shapes, eyes and any extra pieces on a tray.

Let your child arrange shapes into an animal, frame or pattern before gluing anything down.

Glue the base pieces first, then add smaller details on top.

Stick on googly eyes last, since they are the fiddliest part.

Leave flat for ten minutes so the glue sets before it is picked up.

Arranging pieces before gluing helps children practise thinking about how parts fit into a whole.

Peeling backing paper and pressing shapes into place gives children an opportunity to practise finger control and coordination.

Use pre-cut self-adhesive foam shapes so the whole activity is peel-and-stick with no glue involved.
Make it more challenging
Ask them to design a foam creature with a name and a made-up habitat, then explain their choices to you.
Safety and supervision
- Adults do any cutting of foam sheets, especially for under-fives.
- Small foam pieces and googly eyes are a choking hazard for children who still mouth objects.
- Use a washable, non-toxic craft glue and supervise use of the glue stick lid.
