Calm-Down Gratitude Jar
Decorate a jar and add one good moment from the day on a paper slip for a simple family wind-down routine.
By WonderCraft Kids Editorial Team, Editorial team · Updated 24 August 2026
Decorate a jar, then add one small slip of paper each evening: one good thing from today. It takes four minutes, it works as a wind-down, and re-reading the jar at the end of the month is unexpectedly moving.
What you need
- A clean glass or plastic jar with a lid
- Paper scraps cut into slips
- Markers, stickers, ribbon for decorating
- A pen kept next to the jar
Step by step
- 1
Decorate the jar together — name on the front, stickers and ribbon as they like.
- 2
Cut a stack of thirty slips and keep them in a small bowl beside the jar.
- 3
At bedtime, ask: what was one good thing today?
- 4
Write it down for them, or let them write it themselves however they can.
- 5
Fold it, drop it in, lid on. That is the whole ritual.
- 6
On the last day of the month, tip it out and read them all aloud together.
What kids learn
Emotional vocabulary
Naming what was good builds the language children need to describe how they feel.
Memory and reflection
Recalling the day in order is genuine narrative memory practice, done nightly.
Writing for a reason
A slip that will actually be read again gives writing an audience and a purpose.
Make it easier
They draw the good thing instead of writing it. A picture of a dog counts completely.
Make it more challenging
Add a second slip: one thing that was hard today, and what helped. Keep them in separate jars.
Safety and supervision
- Use a plastic jar for younger children; glass by a bed is worth avoiding.
- Keep the ritual voluntary — pushing on a bad day makes it a chore rather than a comfort.
- Store small stickers and ribbon away from under-threes.
