Living Room Obstacle Course
Cushions, tape and chairs turn a rainy afternoon into a body-shaking workout.
By WonderCraft Kids Editorial Team, Editorial team · Updated 18 August 2026
When the weather has cancelled the park and everyone is climbing the walls, build a course instead. Ten minutes of setup creates forty minutes of active indoor play with plenty of room to crawl, balance and jump.
What you need
- Sofa cushions and pillows
- Masking or painter's tape
- Two dining chairs and a blanket
- A laundry basket and soft balls or socks
- A kitchen timer
Step by step
- 1
Tape a wobbly line on the floor for a balance beam.
- 2
Lay cushions as stepping stones with lava in between.
- 3
Drape a blanket over two chairs to make a tunnel.
- 4
Finish with a basket toss: three rolled socks from behind a tape line.
- 5
Walk it once together, then time them.
- 6
Let them redesign the course. That part is often better than yours.
What kids learn
Gross motor planning
Sequencing balance, crawl, jump and throw gives children a chance to plan and remember a chain of movements.
Whole-body movement
Pushing, crawling and landing offer varied whole-body movement during indoor play.
Design thinking
Redesigning the course after a run is iteration: test, notice the flaw, change it.
Make it easier
Three stations only, no timer. Speed pressure makes younger children rush and fall.
Make it more challenging
Add a memory element: they must call out each station's name before doing it, in order.
Safety and supervision
- Clear a two-metre margin around anything they jump from, and remove hard-cornered furniture.
- Keep the jump height below knee level for under-fives.
- Socks off — bare feet grip, socks slide on wood floors.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions
We live in a flat. Is this too noisy?+
Swap jumping stations for crawling, balancing and bear walks for a quieter course with less thumping.
How do I keep it interesting?+
Change one station a day rather than rebuilding it all. Novelty in small doses lasts longer.
