Painting on canvas rather than paper feels like a step up, and the stiff surface holds up to thicker paint and more layers than card ever could. There is no drawing pressure either, since abstract colour and pattern look just as finished as a realistic picture. Set it up over old newspaper and expect the canvas to take a full day to dry between layers.

What you need

A small canvas, 20cm x 20cm or similar
Acrylic or washable paint, 4-6 colours
A range of brush sizes
A palette or paper plate for mixing
Water pot for rinsing brushes
Newspaper or a wipe-clean mat

Step by step

Lay newspaper down and set the canvas flat on top.

Choose two or three base colours and cover the whole canvas first.

Let the base layer dry for at least an hour before adding detail.

Add pattern, lines or shapes on top once the base is touch-dry.

Mix leftover paint on the palette to try a new colour before adding it.

Leave the finished canvas flat to dry fully, ideally overnight, before hanging.

Offer a smaller canvas and just two colours, focusing on covering the surface rather than a detailed picture.

Make it more challenging

Ask for a specific theme, such as a sunset or an underwater scene, built up in three separate painting sessions.

Safety and supervision

Acrylic paint does not wash out of fabric, so cover clothing or use washable paint for younger children.
Rinse brushes in water only, and keep water pots away from very young children who might drink from them.
Ventilate the room slightly, as acrylic paint has a mild odour while wet.
