Threading beads onto elastic cord creates necklaces and bracelets with a simple tray setup.

A tray of beads and a length of stretchy cord are enough for a child to design, thread and wear a finished piece within one session. Sorting by colour first keeps the choices visible and helps contain loose pieces.
What you need
- Bag of assorted beads
- Stretchy elastic cord or thin string
- Small scissors (adult use)
- Sorting tray or muffin tin
- Sticky tape
- Clasps or extra beads to finish ends (optional)
Step by step
- 1
Sort the beads by colour or size into the tray so choices are easy to see.

Cut a length of elastic cord slightly longer than needed and tape one end to the table.

Let your child thread beads in whatever order they choose, checking the length against a wrist or neck now and then.

Once it is long enough, remove the tape and tie the two ends together with a double knot.

Trim the loose ends and tuck the knot inside a bead if you have one with a large hole.

Repeat to make a matching bracelet or a set for a sibling or friend.

Pinching a small bead and guiding it onto cord can help children practise hand-eye coordination.

Repeating a colour order gives children a chance to plan and check a simple sequence themselves.

Asking for 'five red beads then three blue' turns the tray into an easy counting exercise.
Make it easier
Use large chunky beads with wide holes and pre-cut cord with a knot already tied at one end.
Make it more challenging
Introduce a bead loom or a symmetrical pattern that has to match on both sides of a centre bead.
Safety and supervision
- Small beads are a choking hazard and are not suitable for children who still mouth objects; supervise closely.
- Do not use magnetic beads for this activity. If any magnet is swallowed, seek emergency medical help immediately.
- Adults should handle all cutting of cord and elastic.
