A shallow tray filled with soil, moss and tiny plants that a child plans, plants and waters as their own patch.

A mini garden gives a child a scaled-down growing space they fully control, whether it lives on a windowsill or a corner of the real garden. They choose what goes where, press seeds or small plants into soil, and add stones or twigs to make paths and features. It needs real watering and real patience over days and weeks, which is the whole point.
What you need
- A shallow tray, old drawer or large plant pot
- Potting soil or compost
- A few small plants, succulents or seeds
- Moss, small stones or twigs for paths and decoration
- A small watering can
- Optional tiny figures or fairy garden accessories
Step by step
- 1
Fill the tray with a few centimetres of potting soil, leaving room to add plants without it overflowing.
- 2
Let your child decide roughly where the plants, paths and features will go before digging anything in.
- 3
Press small plants or seeds gently into the soil at the marked spots and firm the soil around them.
- 4
Lay stones or twigs to mark out a path or border between sections.
- 5
Tuck moss into any bare patches for a finished, green look.
- 6
Water lightly straight away, then set a simple routine for checking and watering every few days.
What kids learn
Understanding growth over time
Checking the same plants day after day gives children a chance to practise noticing gradual change.
Planning and spatial layout
Deciding where each feature goes before planting can help children practise thinking ahead about a finished design.
Responsibility for a living thing
Taking on regular watering gives children a chance to practise following through on an ongoing task.
Make it easier
Use hardy succulents that need little water and cannot easily be damaged by an enthusiastic five-year-old with a watering can.
Make it more challenging
Grow from seed instead of small plants, and keep a simple daily diary noting height or new leaves as they appear.
Safety and supervision
- Supervise young children around soil and small stones, which can be a choking hazard if mouthed.
- Wash hands after handling soil and plants, and check none of the chosen plants are toxic if eaten.
- Keep watering cans and any tools out of reach when not in use.

Frequently asked questions
What plants work best for a first mini garden?+
Hardy, low-maintenance options like succulents, moss and cress are forgiving of over- or under-watering.
Can this be done indoors on a windowsill?+
Yes, a tray on a sunny windowsill works well, though check the tray does not leak onto furniture underneath.
