Small squares of coloured paper or foam glued into a grid give children a satisfying introduction to mosaic pattern-making.

Mosaic art breaks a picture down into small, manageable pieces, which suits children who find a blank page overwhelming. Pre-cut paper or foam squares are placed one at a time onto a drawn outline, filling it in like a puzzle. It is slower than free painting, but the structure of following an outline and filling gaps keeps children engaged well past the point they would usually wander off.
What you need
- Coloured paper or craft foam cut into small squares
- Card or thick paper as a base
- A simple outline drawn in pencil
- Glue stick or craft glue
- Tweezers (optional, for smaller pieces)
- A tray to sort squares by colour
Step by step
- 1
Draw a simple outline on the card, such as a fish, flower or house.

Sort the coloured squares into small piles or a divided tray.

Spread a thin layer of glue over one small section of the outline at a time.
- 4
Press squares into the glued section, leaving small gaps between pieces as in a real mosaic.

Work section by section until the whole outline is filled.

Leave flat to dry fully before propping it up to display.

Picking up and placing small squares practises the same pincer grip used for buttons and zips.

Make it easier
Use a large simple outline and bigger squares, filling only a small part of the picture in one sitting.
Make it more challenging
Set a rule about shading, such as darker colours near the edges and lighter ones in the centre, for a more deliberate design.
Safety and supervision
- Small paper or foam squares are a choking hazard for children who still mouth objects.
- Adults handle any cutting of the coloured squares in advance.

Do I need to buy special mosaic tiles?+
No, cut squares from ordinary coloured paper or craft foam work just as well for a first mosaic project.
What if my child wants to leave no gaps between squares?+
That is fine too; gaps are traditional but a fully packed mosaic still looks complete and is easier for younger children to manage.
