Kids Scratch Art
Scratching a wooden stylus through a black coating reveals hidden rainbow colour underneath, no paint required.

Scratch art boards are already coated in black wax over bright colour, so all a child does is scratch away lines with a wooden stylus to reveal what is underneath. There is no drying time and no paint to spill, which makes it an easy activity to hand over and walk away from. The satisfaction comes from watching colour appear stroke by stroke rather than from mixing anything themselves.
What you need
- Scratch art boards or scratch art paper
- Wooden scratch stylus, one per child
- A pencil for sketching a design first (optional)
- A tray to catch black scratchings
- Cocktail sticks as a spare tool if a stylus is lost
Step by step

Give each child a scratch board and a stylus over a tray to catch the black flecks.

Suggest sketching a light guide shape in pencil on top of the black coating first.

Scratch along the lines using firm, even pressure.

Fill in wider areas with side-to-side strokes to reveal more colour.

Tip loose scratchings into the bin rather than shaking them onto the floor.

Display the finished piece somewhere with good light so the colours show.

Safety and supervision
- The stylus has a rounded tip but should still be used seated at a table, not while moving around.
- Loose black scratchings can be inhaled if blown around; brush them into a bin rather than off the table.
