Alphabet Sensory Letter Hunt
Letters buried in a rice bin, matched to a written chart as they surface.

Early literacy works best when it does not look like a lesson. Bury magnetic letters in a sensory bin and give them a chart to match against — the recognition practice hides completely inside the digging.
What you need
- A sensory bin with rice, oats or dried beans
- Magnetic or foam letters
- A printed or hand-written alphabet chart
- Tongs and a small scoop
- A marker to cross letters off
Step by step
- 1
Bury 10-15 letters in the bin — start with the letters of their name.

Give them the chart and a marker.
- 3
Each letter they dig out gets named, then crossed off the chart.
- 4
If they cannot name it, say it for them and move on without making it a test.
- 5
Once their name letters are found, ask them to put them in order.
- 6
Rebury and repeat with a new set — sounds, capitals, or their sibling's name.
What kids learn
Letter recognition
Matching a 3D letter to a printed one is harder, and more useful, than reciting the alphabet.
Phonemic awareness
Saying a letter sound as it appears introduces children to connecting printed letters with spoken sounds.
Tactile memory
Feeling a letter's shape while naming it gives a second route into remembering it.
Make it easier
Five letters only, all from their name, in a shallow tray they can see into.
Make it more challenging
Hide whole CVC words scrambled and ask them to reassemble cat, dog and sun.
Safety and supervision
- Dry rice and beans are choking hazards; supervise closely and skip for mouthing children.
- Check foam letters for bite damage and retire damaged ones.
- Sweep spills promptly.
