Magic Milk Colour Experiment
A drop of dish soap sends food colouring swirling across a plate of milk in patterns that never repeat.

Magic milk looks like sorcery but runs on simple chemistry: soap breaking the fat in milk sends drops of food colouring swirling and blooming across the surface. Setup is a plate, some milk and a few drops of colour; the whole show is over in a couple of minutes, which makes it perfect for a quick burst of wonder between other activities.
What you need
- Whole milk, enough to cover a shallow plate
- Food colouring, several colours
- Washing-up liquid
- A cotton bud
- A shallow plate or dish
Step by step
- 1
Pour milk into the plate until it forms a thin, even layer.

Add several drops of different food colourings spaced around the surface.
- 3
Dip a cotton bud into washing-up liquid.
- 4
Touch the soapy cotton bud gently to the centre of the milk, not into any drop of colour.

Watch the colours burst and swirl outward across the surface.
- 6
Add a fresh soapy cotton bud in a new spot to keep the swirling going.

Let an adult do the soap dipping and let the child choose where each colour drop goes.
Make it more challenging
Try semi-skimmed versus whole milk and compare how much difference the fat content makes to the swirl.
Safety and supervision
- This experiment uses food ingredients but is not for eating or drinking.
- Keep washing-up liquid away from eyes and mouths.
- Supervise closely if food colouring stains hands or surfaces, as some colourings do not wash out easily.
- Check for dairy allergies, discard the milk after the activity and wipe up spills promptly.

Whole milk works best because of its higher fat content; skimmed milk gives a much weaker reaction.

No, once soap is added the milk should not be consumed or reused, so pour it away when you are finished.
