Make Your Own Keychains
Beads, charms and a length of cord turn spare afternoons into a stack of keychains worth giving away.

This is threading with a purpose: instead of a random string of beads, the finished piece clips onto a bag or a set of keys, which makes children take more care over the pattern. Lay out a tray of beads, letters and small charms, and let them design a few before you crimp the ends. It suits a rainy afternoon and doubles as an easy homemade gift.
What you need
- Keyring hardware, one per keychain
- Beading cord or elastic thread
- Pony beads and alphabet beads
- Small charms
- Crimp beads or a knot
- A small tray to sort beads by colour
Step by step
- 1
Cut a length of cord and tie one end to the keyring, or thread through a crimp bead.

Sort beads into small piles or a divided tray so choices are quick to make.

Let your child thread beads in whatever order they like, or spell a name with letter beads.

Add a charm near the end for weight and interest.

Knot the cord securely against the keyring or squeeze the crimp bead flat with pliers.

Trim any excess cord close to the knot.

Picking up small beads and guiding them onto cord gives children a chance to practise precise hand-eye coordination.

Make it easier
Use large pony beads and a stiff lace instead of cord, which threads far more easily for small hands.
Make it more challenging
Set a colour rule, such as alternating two colours exactly, and check the pattern together at the end.
Safety and supervision
- Small beads and charms are a choking hazard; not suitable for children who still mouth objects.
- Adults handle crimping pliers and any cutting of cord.
- Keep spare beads in a closed container rather than loose on the table.

It is best from around four, once a child reliably keeps beads out of their mouth. Use jumbo beads for younger children instead.
What cord holds up best?+
Stretch elastic cord is forgiving for beginners, but a waxed cotton cord with a proper knot lasts longer on a keychain used daily.
