Cardboard Marble Run Challenge
Tubes, tape and a wall — an engineering problem with an instant pass or fail.
By WonderCraft Kids Editorial Team, Editorial team · Updated 20 August 2026
A marble run is the perfect engineering brief: the test takes one second and the result is unarguable. Children iterate on the angle of a tube ten times in a row without ever calling it practice.
What you need
- Cardboard tubes, cut in half lengthways for open channels
- A large flattened cardboard box as the backing board
- Masking tape
- Marbles or small balls
- A cup or tin for the finish
- Scissors (adult use for thick card)
Step by step
- 1
Stand the backing board against a wall or lay it flat on the floor.
- 2
Tape the first channel near the top at a gentle slope and test it with a marble.
- 3
Keep adding channels, testing after every single one. This is the important habit.
- 4
Add a jump: leave a small gap between two channels and adjust until the marble clears it.
- 5
Finish with a cup so there is a satisfying clunk at the end.
- 6
Time the run, then challenge them to make it slower rather than faster.
What kids learn
Gravity and slope
Too steep and the marble flies off; too flat and it stops. Finding the window is real physics.
Iterative design
Build, test, adjust, repeat. This is engineering practice, at seven years old.
Persistence
A failed run is obviously fixable, which makes children far more willing to keep trying.
Make it easier
Three straight channels on a gentle slope, no jumps. Success first, complexity after.
Make it more challenging
Set constraints: the run must take longer than eight seconds and include one 180-degree turn.
Safety and supervision
- Marbles are a serious choking hazard — keep this activity away from under-threes entirely.
- Adults cut tubes and thick cardboard.
- Collect stray marbles immediately; they are dangerous underfoot on hard floors.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions
The marble keeps flying off the corners.+
Reduce the slope before the turn and tape a small card wall on the outside edge.
No marbles at home?+
Use a bouncy ball, a large bead or a scrunched foil ball — heavier balls actually run better.
