Shop-bought dough dries out and cracks. This no-cook version stays soft for months in a tub, costs pennies, and the making of it is half the activity — children measure, pour and knead their way through the whole recipe.

What you need

  • 2 cups plain flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tbsp cream of tartar
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1.5 cups boiling water (adult only)
  • Food colouring; a drop of vanilla or lavender if you like

Step by step

  1. 1

Let your child whisk the flour, salt and cream of tartar together in a big bowl.

  2. 2

Add the oil and colouring to the boiling water, then pour it in yourself.

  3. 3

Stir with a wooden spoon until it comes together into a shaggy ball.

  4. 4

When it is cool enough to touch, knead for two minutes until smooth and stretchy.

  5. 5

Divide it up and add tools: rollers, cutters, a garlic press for hair.

  6. 6

Store in a sealed tub. It lasts two to three months.

What kids learn

Hand strength

Kneading, rolling and pinching gives children an opportunity to practise controlled hand movements.

Measuring and sequencing

Following a recipe in order is early maths and early reading comprehension at once.

Focused sensory play

Squeezing and shaping dough can offer a quiet, repetitive activity for children who enjoy tactile play.

Make it easier

Make it yourself beforehand and let them do only the kneading and the play.

Make it more challenging

Turn it into a bakery: price list, orders taken on paper, and dough cakes made to a customer's request.

Safety and supervision

  • Boiling water is the adult's job, every time.
  • The salt content makes it unpleasant to eat but watch children who still mouth things.
  • The salt and cream of tartar can make pets seriously ill if eaten in quantity; store the dough where pets cannot reach it.

Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions

Can I leave out the cream of tartar?+

You can, but the dough gets crumbly within a week. Two tablespoons of lemon juice is a decent substitute.

How do I revive dry dough?+

Knead in a teaspoon of water and a few drops of oil. It usually comes right back.
