A plaster painting party works because the hard part is already done before anyone arrives: each guest gets a ready-cast plaster figure, so there is no waiting for anything to set. Guests simply paint, which keeps the mess contained to brushes and pots rather than powder and water. The listed preparation time covers arranging pre-cast figures and paints; any adult-only casting must happen separately the day before.
What you need
- One pre-cast plaster figure per guest (bought ready-made or cast the day before)
- Washable poster or acrylic paint, 5-6 colours
- A small brush per guest, plus a few spares
- Water pots for rinsing brushes
- Table covers or a wipe-clean cloth
- A drying rack or spare table for finished pieces
- Aprons or old shirts
Step by step
- 1
Set out one pre-cast plaster figure per guest at a covered table, spaced so elbows do not collide.

Pour small amounts of paint into shared pots at the centre of the table, refilling as needed.

Give each guest an apron and a brush, and let them start with a base colour before adding detail.

Encourage rinsing the brush between colours to keep the palette clean.

Move finished figures to a labelled drying spot as each guest finishes, so nothing gets bumped.

Send figures home once touch-dry, or wrap them carefully in tissue if they need more drying time.

Safety and supervision
- Use only pre-cast, fully cured plaster figures for a party; casting fresh plaster with a group of children is not practical and dry plaster dust must not be inhaled.
- If you do cast figures in advance yourself, mix the plaster as an adult only, in a ventilated space, and never pour plaster waste down a drain since it sets in the pipework.
- Use non-toxic, washable paint and check it is suitable for the age range attending.
- Cover tables and clothing, since paint on plaster can drip more than paint on paper.

Yes, but do this the day before with an adult handling the mixing and pouring, and allow several hours for the plaster to cure fully before the party so figures are solid and ready to paint.
What paint works best on plaster?+
Washable poster paint soaks in nicely for a matte finish, while acrylic gives brighter, glossier colour but will not wash out of clothing if spilled.
How do we stop the paint pots getting knocked over?+
Use small, heavy-based pots or a shared muffin tin with wells for each colour, kept in the centre of the table away from elbows.
