Indoor Camping Afternoon
Build a blanket fort, add torches and books, then settle inside for a cozy indoor picnic and pretend campout.

When the rain has cancelled everything, camping indoors gives the day a shape. Build in the morning, live in it all afternoon, and eat dinner in the tent because why not.
What you need
- Blankets, sheets and clothes pegs
- Dining chairs or a clothes airer
- Cushions and sleeping bags
- Torches and battery tea lights
- A picnic blanket and snacks
- Books for the tent
Step by step
- 1
Build the frame first: chairs in a square, or a sheet pegged over a clothes airer.
- 2
Drape and peg the sheets — pegs hold far better than tucking.
- 3
Line the floor with cushions and sleeping bags.
- 4
Make it dark: curtains closed, torches and tea lights on.
- 5
Have a picnic lunch inside the tent, then read by torchlight.
- 6
Finish with shadow puppets on the tent wall.
What kids learn
Construction problem-solving
A collapsing roof is an engineering problem with an obvious cause. They will solve it.
Imaginative immersion
A fort that stays up for an afternoon gives children time to return to and extend their pretend-play ideas.
Family connection
Shared unusual routines — dinner in a tent — become the memories children actually keep.
Make it easier
One sheet over the dining table. Instant fort, zero engineering.
Make it more challenging
Add a full camp itinerary written by your child: menu, activity times, a nature walk to the window.
Safety and supervision
- Battery tea lights only. Never a real candle inside fabric.
- Make sure the structure cannot collapse onto a sleeping child, and keep an exit clear.
- Keep the fort away from heaters, radiators and trailing cables.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.
