Rock Painting
A handful of garden stones and some acrylic paint turn a walk outdoors into a lasting painted collection.

Rock painting starts with a small treasure hunt for smooth stones and ends with a windowsill of tiny painted characters, patterns or bugs. The stone's shape often suggests the design before a brush even touches it, which takes the pressure off drawing from scratch. It suits a garden table on a dry day just as well as a covered kitchen table on a wet one.
What you need
- 5-10 smooth stones, washed and dried
- Acrylic or outdoor-grade paint, several colours
- Fine and medium brushes
- A pencil for sketching a design first
- Clear varnish or sealant spray (optional, adult use)
- Newspaper or a wipe-clean mat
Step by step

Wash and fully dry the stones so paint sticks properly.

Sketch a simple design in pencil first, such as a ladybird, a face, or stripes.

Paint a base colour and let it dry before adding detail on top.

Use a fine brush for dots, eyes and small patterns once the base coat is dry.

Leave finished stones to dry fully, ideally overnight, before handling them.

If keeping them outdoors, seal with a clear varnish once dry to protect the paint from weather.

Set a theme, such as a hidden rock garden, and paint a numbered or lettered set to hide and find later.
Safety and supervision
- Check stones for sharp edges before handing them to young children.
- Acrylic paint does not wash out of fabric, so cover clothing or use washable paint indoors.
- If leaving painted rocks outside for others to find, avoid areas near roads or water.
