Small worlds give pretend play a stage. A shallow box lined in black, a handful of foil planets and a torch turns into an hour of narrated space missions — and the building of it is half the fun.

What you need

A shallow box lid or under-bed tray
Black paper or paint
Aluminium foil
White paint or chalk for stars
A small torch
Lego figures or peg dolls as astronauts

Step by step

Line the box with black paper or paint it black and let it dry.

Flick white paint from a brush for a star field, or dot chalk stars on.

Scrunch foil into planets and moons of different sizes.

Add craters by pressing a marble into a foil-covered ball of paper.

Turn the lights off and hand over the torch.

Ask for a mission: what are the astronauts looking for today?

Orbit, crater, moon, mission. Words stick when they belong to an object in their hands.

Light and shadow

Skip the painting; black paper and foil balls are enough for a four-year-old to start playing.

Make it more challenging

Research the real planet order and make them to scale in size, labelled on flags.

Safety and supervision

Supervise torch use and avoid shining it in eyes.
Foil edges can be sharp — scrunch them fully round.
Keep marbles and small parts away from under-threes.
