Paint simple pictures on smooth pebbles, then draw a few from a bag to inspire a new storytelling game.

Paint one simple symbol on each of a dozen pebbles — a house, a moon, a dog — and you have a storytelling kit. Draw three from a bag and a story has to include all of them. It never runs out.

What you need

12-15 smooth flat pebbles
Acrylic or paint pens (acrylic lasts far better on stone)
A fine brush
Clear varnish or Mod Podge
A drawstring bag

Step by step

Wash the pebbles and let them dry completely — paint will not stick to damp stone.

Brainstorm twelve symbols together: person, animal, weather, place, object, feeling.

Paint a base colour if the stone is dark, then the symbol on top.

Keep each image simple and bold. Detail disappears at pebble size.

Seal with varnish once fully dry.

Play: draw three, tell a story that uses all three. You go first.

Make themed sets — a fairytale set, a space set — and write the resulting story down as a book.

Safety and supervision

Acrylic paint is not washable; use old clothes and cover the table.
Collect pebbles responsibly — many beaches and parks prohibit removing stones. Garden centres sell bags cheaply.
Small stones are a choking hazard for under-threes.
