Summer Holiday Craft Box
A ready-to-grab box of varied crafts that fills the long summer break with short, screen-free sessions.

The summer holidays are long enough that one big activity will not stretch across it, so this is a box of ten or so small, unrelated crafts children can dip into whenever boredom strikes. Each one uses ordinary household or garden materials and takes under half an hour, so it works for a rainy afternoon or a five-minute gap between other plans. Building the box takes one setup session; after that it runs itself.
What you need
- A large box or crate to hold the whole collection
- Paper, card and paint for drawing and painting activities
- Natural materials: leaves, shells, pebbles collected outdoors
- Recycled items: cereal boxes, yoghurt pots, kitchen roll tubes
- Scissors, glue and tape
- A few small envelopes for grouping activity kits within the box
Step by step
- 1
Gather ten or so quick craft ideas, mixing indoor ones like paper boats with outdoor ones like leaf rubbings.
- 2
Pack the specific materials each idea needs into its own small envelope or bag.
- 3
Label each bag with a picture or one word so children can pick without reading.
- 4
Store the box somewhere your child can reach it independently.
- 5
When a session starts, let your child choose a bag rather than assigning one.
- 6
Refill or swap out bags partway through the holidays to keep the box feeling new.
What kids learn
Independent decision-making
Letting a child choose their own activity from the box gives them practice at making a small decision and following it through.
Working with varied materials
Moving between paper, paint and natural materials across the holidays can help children practise adapting technique to different textures.
Filling unstructured time
Having a ready resource to turn to gives children a chance to occupy themselves without needing constant adult input.
Make it easier
Limit the box to four or five well-tested favourites rather than ten new ideas, so there is less novelty to manage at once.
Make it more challenging
Ask your child to help plan and pack next week's bags themselves, choosing materials from what is around the house.
Safety and supervision
- Adults should do all cutting for children under five and supervise scissor use generally.
- Check collected natural materials for insects or sharp edges before use.
- Keep small recycled items like bottle caps away from children who still mouth objects.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions
How many activities should the box hold?+
Ten is a reasonable starting point for a six-week break; you can top it up partway through rather than planning every session upfront.
What if my child always picks the same bag?+
That is fine — repeated play with a favourite still builds skill, but you can quietly retire a bag once it has been used several times.
