Threading Pasta Necklaces
Dyed penne on a shoelace: the classic fine-motor task, still unbeaten.
By WonderCraft Kids Editorial Team, Editorial team · Updated 4 August 2026
Threading is one of the purest fine-motor exercises there is, and children find it unaccountably satisfying. Dye the pasta the day before and you have a rainbow of beads for pennies.
What you need
- Dry penne, rigatoni or wheels
- Food colouring and 1 tbsp vinegar per colour
- Zip bags
- Shoelaces or stiffened cord
- Small bowls for sorting
Step by step
- 1
Shake pasta, colouring and vinegar in a bag until evenly coated.
- 2
Dry on a tray for an hour and sort into bowls by colour.
- 3
Knot one pasta piece at the end of the lace so nothing slides off.
- 4
Thread. Say nothing about patterns yet — let them enjoy it first.
- 5
When they are fluent, suggest a red-blue-red-blue pattern.
- 6
Tie off and wear immediately.
What kids learn
Bilateral coordination
One hand holds, the other threads. Using both hands for different jobs is a key developmental step.
Patterning
Repeating AB or ABC sequences is the foundation of algebraic thinking, taught early and physically.
Concentration
Threading demands sustained focus, and children will often work far past their usual attention span.
Make it easier
Use large rigatoni and a stiff pipe cleaner instead of a lace — much easier to aim.
Make it more challenging
Give a pattern card to copy, or ask for a necklace with exactly twenty beads in four colours.
Safety and supervision
- Cords are a strangulation risk. Make necklaces short, supervise wearing, and remove before sleep or play.
- Not suitable for children who still mouth objects.
- Vinegar-dyed pasta is not for eating.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.
