Tie-Dye T-Shirt Craft
Rubber bands, dye and a plain white t-shirt turn into a wearable souvenir of one messy, memorable afternoon.

Tie-dye combines twisting and banding fabric with a colourful, unpredictable reveal the next day. Plan to work outdoors, since the dye can permanently mark clothing, floors and nearby surfaces.
What you need
- A plain white cotton t-shirt, pre-washed
- Fabric dye kit with squeeze bottles
- Rubber bands, 6-10 per shirt
- Rubber gloves
- Plastic sheeting or a bin bag to cover the work surface
- A zip bag for the shirt to cure in overnight
Step by step
- 1
Pinch the centre of the dry shirt and twist it into a spiral, or scrunch it for a random pattern.

Wrap rubber bands around the spiral or scrunch to divide it into sections.

Put on gloves and lay the shirt on the covered surface.

Squeeze one dye colour into each section, turning the shirt over to cover both sides.

Seal the wet shirt in a zip bag and leave it to cure for at least six hours, ideally overnight.

Rinse under cool water until it runs clear, remove the bands, then wash separately before wearing.

Use a simple scrunch-and-band pattern with just two colours rather than a spiral.
Make it more challenging
Try a precise spiral fold with five or six colours placed in a deliberate rainbow order.
Safety and supervision
- Adults handle the dye and pouring; wear gloves throughout, as dye stains skin as well as fabric.
- Cover the work surface fully outdoors or on a surface you do not mind marking.
- Keep dye away from eyes and off other fabrics until the shirt is fully rinsed and dry.
