This is a craft-table project that scales from one child to a whole party. Older children can braid embroidery floss, while four-year-olds should use the large-bead threading version with close supervision. Every finished bracelet can be given as a simple handmade gift.
What you need
- Embroidery floss in pink, red and white, 3-4 lengths per bracelet
- Small heart-shaped beads or pony beads
- Sticky tape or a clipboard to anchor the braid
- Scissors (adult use)
- A ruler
Step by step
- 1
Cut three lengths of floss about 40cm long per bracelet.
- 2
Knot the top and tape it to a table edge or clip it to a board.
- 3
Show a simple three-strand braid, or thread beads onto a single doubled strand instead.
- 4
Let your child braid or thread until the strip is long enough to wrap a wrist.
- 5
Knot the end and trim the loose thread with scissors.
- 6
Tie each finished bracelet onto its recipient's wrist, or box a few together as gifts.
What kids learn
Fine motor sequencing
Braiding asks children to hold tension in two strands while moving a third, which can help build finger dexterity and hand coordination.
Following a repeating pattern
Over-under-repeat braiding gives practice at spotting and continuing a sequence.
Giving as a social skill
Making something specifically to give away gives children a chance to think about another person's preferences.
Make it easier
Thread large pony beads onto a single knotted cord instead of braiding — the fine motor demand is lower but the result is just as wearable.
Make it more challenging
Try a four-strand braid or add a simple bead pattern that repeats every third bead, which takes real concentration to keep track of.
Safety and supervision
- Small beads are a choking hazard; keep them away from children who still put things in their mouths.
- Adults should do all cutting for children under five.
- Supervise tying bracelets onto wrists so they are snug, not tight.

Frequently asked questions
My child cannot manage a three-strand braid, what else can they do?+
Threading beads onto elastic cord is a good substitute; it uses the same concentration without the coordination needed to keep three strands taut.
How do we stop the floss tangling?+
Cut shorter lengths, around 30cm, and tape the top firmly before starting; tangling mostly happens when the working end is too long.
