Five-Minute Colour Scavenger Hunt
A strip of coloured paper and a mission: find something that matches, fast.

When you have five minutes and a restless child, this one needs no preparation at all. It works in the house, the garden, a waiting room or a car park, and it resets the mood almost every time.
What you need
- Scraps of coloured paper or paint chips
- A basket or bag (optional)
- A timer or just counting out loud
Step by step
- 1
Hand over one colour and say: find me something this colour, go.
- 2
Count to twenty out loud while they search.
- 3
Compare their find against the paper. Close enough always counts.
- 4
Swap colours and repeat.
- 5
For older children ask for three things in one colour, in one minute.
- 6
Finish with a hardest colour round — grey, or gold.

Visual matching
Comparing a sample against the room is real perceptual discrimination, not just colour naming.
Colour vocabulary
Close-but-not-quite matches prompt words like pale, dark, nearly and in-between.
Movement break
Short bursts of purposeful movement help a stuck child settle back into something quieter.
Make it easier
Stick to bold primaries and search one room at a time.
Make it more challenging
Switch to categories: something rough, something smaller than your thumb, something that starts with S.

- Set boundaries before you start: this room, or the garden only.
- Agree that fragile and off-limits items are not collectable.
