Collecting is its own pleasure for small children. Give the collection a destination — a frame of sticky-side-out contact paper — and a twenty-minute walk turns into an hour-long project that ends on the window.

What you need

Cardboard from a delivery box
Clear contact paper or wide sticky tape
Scissors (adult use)
A collecting bag or bucket
Leaves, petals, seed heads, feathers, grasses

Step by step

Cut a cardboard frame roughly A4 with a large window in the middle.

Tape contact paper across the window, sticky side facing out.

Go for a walk and collect anything flat and interesting. Only fallen things.

Back home, press each find onto the sticky window.

Fill gaps with petals and grass until the surface is covered.

Tape it to a window so the light comes through.

Make it easier

Pre-cut the frame and collect together, naming things as you go. Sticking alone is plenty for a two-year-old.

Make it more challenging

Add a field guide: identify and label five finds, and note where each was growing.

Safety and supervision

Teach the rule: we collect fallen things, we do not pick living plants.
Learn the few poisonous berries and leaves in your area and make them a look-only category.
Wash hands after handling soil and fungi, and avoid mushrooms entirely.
