Pom-Pom Drop Fine Motor Tube

Five minutes with masking tape produces a wall of tubes that a two-year-old will feed pom-poms into for half an hour. It is the cheapest fine-motor set-up there is, and you can change the layout each time.
What you need
- 4-6 cardboard tubes
- Masking tape
- A bag of pom-poms (2-3 cm, too big to swallow)
- A bowl or tin at the bottom
- Tongs or a large clothes peg (optional)
Step by step
- 1
Tape the tubes to a wall, door or fridge at your child's chest height, angled so a pom-pom rolls.

Stagger them so one tube's exit feeds into the next tube's entrance.

Put the bowl at the bottom to catch the drop.

Hand over the pom-poms and show one drop.

When they have the hang of it, offer tongs instead of fingers.

Move one tube to change the route and the interest resets.
What kids learn
Pincer grip
Picking up a pom-pom with thumb and forefinger is the precursor to holding a pencil correctly.
Object permanence
For a two-year-old, something disappearing into a tube and reappearing below is still genuinely thrilling.
Cause and effect
Changing the tube angle changes whether it rolls. They will experiment with this unprompted.
Make it easier
One vertical tube at chest height. Immediate, reliable success.
Make it more challenging
Colour-match: tape a coloured dot on each tube and ask for matching pom-poms, then use tongs only.
Safety and supervision
- Pom-poms under 3 cm are a choking hazard for under-threes — buy the large size and count them back in.
- Use masking tape on painted walls, not duct tape.
- Never tape tubes above head height where a child would climb.
