First Finger Painting for Toddlers
Yogurt-and-colour paint gives toddlers a simple first finger-painting experience.
By WonderCraft Kids Editorial Team, Editorial team · Updated 11 August 2026
This first painting activity lets toddlers explore colour with their hands using a yogurt base. It wipes off a high-chair tray easily, but still needs close supervision and is not intended as food.
What you need
- Plain full-fat yogurt (or cornflour and water)
- Food colouring, 3 colours
- An ice cube tray or muffin tin
- Thick paper, a high-chair tray or a baking sheet
- A towel and a warm flannel
Step by step
- 1
Spoon yogurt into three wells and stir a different colour into each.
- 2
Strip your child to a nappy or an old t-shirt.
- 3
Put a blob of one colour directly on the paper and let them find it.
- 4
Add the second colour a few minutes later so the mixing is a separate event.
- 5
Let them smear, pat and drag. Do not demonstrate making a picture.
- 6
Photograph it — yogurt paintings do not keep — then wipe everything down.
What kids learn
Texture exploration
If your child is unsure about messy textures, a short, low-pressure try gives them space to explore at their own pace.
Mark making
Smearing, patting and making dots introduces children to creating marks with their hands.
Colour discovery
Red and yellow becoming orange under their own hand is more memorable than any flashcard.
Make it easier
One colour, on a tray, no paper. Fewer variables, less overwhelm.
Make it more challenging
Add cotton buds and a comb for texture, and move to real washable paint on big paper.
Safety and supervision
- The yogurt mixture is not a snack or a substitute for close supervision; use only a small amount and stop repeated eating.
- Check for dairy allergies; cornflour and water with a drop of colouring is the alternative.
- Never leave a child alone with paint, even edible paint.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions
My toddler hates the texture. Now what?+
Put the paint in a sealed freezer bag taped to the table. They get the visual with none of the touch.
Does food colouring stain?+
It can stain grout and light fabric. Use gel colours sparingly or switch to liquid watercolour.
