Backyard Water Play Station
Two washing-up bowls, a jug and a sponge — the cheapest hour of the summer.
By WonderCraft Kids Editorial Team, Editorial team · Updated 12 July 2026
Children do not need an expensive water table. They need water, containers of different sizes, and permission to get wet. Set it up on the grass and you have a self-running activity you can supervise from a deck chair.
What you need
- Two washing-up bowls or storage tubs
- Jugs, cups, funnels and a small watering can
- Sponges and a whisk
- A squirt of washing-up liquid for a bubble bowl
- Plastic animals or boats
- Towels
Step by step
- 1
Set both bowls on a low table or on the grass at waist height for your child.
- 2
Fill one with plain water and one with bubbly water.
- 3
Add the pouring tools to one bowl and the sponges and whisk to the other.
- 4
Start them off by transferring water between containers, then step back.
- 5
Introduce a float-or-sink challenge when the pouring winds down.
- 6
Tip the water on the garden beds when you are finished.
What kids learn
Volume and conservation
Comparing tall, thin and short, wide cups introduces children to how container shape and volume can differ.
Floating and sinking
Predicting then testing builds the habit of checking an idea against reality.
Independent play
Open-ended containers and tools give children space to choose how they pour, scoop and play.
Make it easier
One bowl, two cups, shallow water. Simplicity is what makes it last with a two-year-old.
Make it more challenging
Add a challenge: build a boat from foil that carries ten coins without sinking.
Safety and supervision
- Constant supervision. Young children can drown in a few centimetres of water — never leave the area.
- Empty every container the moment play ends.
- Set up in shade and reapply sunscreen; wet skin burns faster.
Adult supervision is required for every activity on this site. Read our full child safety guidelines.

Frequently asked questions
Can we do this indoors?+
Yes — in the bath or at the kitchen sink on a step stool, with towels down.
How do I stop them tipping it everywhere?+
Expect some tipping, and set it on grass. Fighting it turns a calm activity into a battle.
